Domestic violence can take many forms, and they are all extremely serious. Whatever form it takes, domestic violence undermines the independence and confidence of the person it is aimed at, and represents a very real threat to that persons physical and mental health. We usually divide up the perpetration of domestic violence into five main categories (which are outlined below, with examples of each), but violence in relationships is rarely contained to one of these types, and often includes different examples from one or more groups. Also, most of the examples of violent behaviour given below could take place in any abusive relationship, but some can be specifically associated with domestic violence in LBGT relationships. These are identified separately. Psychological/ Emotional/ Verbal Abuse Verbal or non-verbal abuse of a spouse or intimate partner consists of more subtle actions than physical abuse. People who have experienced both physical and psychological abuse frequently say that the psychological abuse is far worse because it has a damaging effect on their self-esteem. Many people who are psychologically abused are not aware that they are being abused because they believe that there is some truth in their partners words. Examples include: Verbal attacks on self esteem/name calling Swearing and shouting Repeated accusations of infidelity/cheating/affairs or eyeing other people Threats of suicide Threats to harm others Intimidation Threatening tone of voice Control over friends and family Saying youre a bad mother Threatening to take children away Mimicking Lying/deceitfulness Possessiveness Shaming, mocking, or criticizing the victim, either alone or in front of others Blaming the victim for how the abuser acts or feels Guilt producing statements Saying no one will want them or believe them Twisting your words Sarcasm Unreasonable jealousy and possessiveness Constantly checking up and insisting about knowing whereabouts The examples of behaviour above can take place in all abusive relationships. Below are some examples of psychological abuse that are specifically associated with domestic violence in LBGT relationships: Threatening to out partner to friends, family, and work colleagues (using externalised homophobia). Using internalised homophobia eg. using homophobic terms of abuse, or saying You deserve it because youre gay Threatening to disclose HIV status Making partner feel bad about past heterosexual experiences Isolation, telling the partner they will have no support if they leave them because of a lack of LBGT services in the community Physical abuse Any aggressive behaviour that is directed at another persons body. Many women suffer physical abuse without suffering any physical injury. Examples include: Hitting/ punching burning Pushing Kicking Biting Pinching Scratching Grabbing Choking Hair pulling Shaking Slapping Squeezing Throwing things at you Banging against wall Restraining and holding Threatening with fist Threatening with weapons Reckless driving Taking vehicle keys Pushing out of vehicle Withdrawal of safety i.e. locking out of home, abandoning in an unsafe area Forced confinement, including locking a person in a house Throwing plates of food, hot drinks etc. Suffocating with a pillow Financial abuse This could mean having no access to the familys money. The sufferer may live in a comfortable home, wear good clothing, have children who have toys etc, but have no control over what is spent or saved. Examples include: Partner makes all the decisions re: money Withholding money Controlling the money No money for personal use Not allowed to control or earn your own finances Misuse of joint bank accounts Only giving an allowance Stealing from or defrauding a partner of money or assets Withholding physical resources such as food, clothes, necessary medications, or shelter Preventing the spouse or intimate partner from working or choosing an occupation Running debts Gambling with familys money Sexual Abuse Any forced sexual activity, whether physically or verbally. No one, not even a marital partner, has the right to force someone to participate in sexual activity. Examples include: Deciding how a person dresses Making inappropriate sexual comments Making you watch pornography Forced kissing, fondling Withdrawal of intimacy/ affection as punishment Expecting to make up after a fight with sex Rape/ forcing sex, and rape using objects Rude gestures Making sexual threats with objects Forced pregnancy Talking dirty/ shaming Mocking body parts Sex for favours Forced prostitution Making partner wear revealing clothes Withholding contraception Forcing a person to have sex with friends Forcing a person to perform sado-masochistic acts Abuse to Property/Pets The destruction of any type of property, with the explicit or implicit threat that you are next Examples include: Keying the car Breaking doors Destroying the house or objects in the house Tearing up paperwork Punching walls Tearing clothing The Cycle of Violence Have a look at the diagram below to see how many relationships experience domestic violence. The violence does not take place constantly, but blows-up after tension has been building in the home, and it is often followed by a honeymoon period, when the perpetrator says he/ she is sorry, and is loving towards you again, after which the tension can start to mount again. Honeymoon Stage Tension Building Stage -He/ she may be loving - You may feel like youre and affectionate, walking on eggshells, buying flowers, trying to keep the peace giving compliments Blow-up Stage -There is an explosion and he/ she might shout or hit you How the cycle progresses over time Below is another diagram, which shows how this cycle changes over time. Each time it goes round, the tension and blow-up periods get more dramatic and violent, and the honeymoon period gets smaller.
