Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) hate crime
can take many forms but frequently it involves one or more of the following:
- verbal abuse (e.g. threats, insults, nuisance phone calls, name calling)
- physical assaults and violence (e.g. pushing, stabbing or even manslaughter)
- attacks against your property (e.g. insulting graffiti, vandalism, theft or damage to your home or car)
- emotional intimidation (e.g. threatening to 'out' a person to colleagues, family or friends)
LGBT hate crime or incidents can occur in a number of places, such as your home, your school, in your neighbourhood, when you are out socialising or simply walking down a street.
What do we offer?
If you are LGBT and have been a victim of an LGBT hate crime or
incident then Bede House is here to help.
- You can meet a dedicated LGBT worker in a safe, welcoming space
- You will receive a free one-to-one and confidential service
- You will have the chance to explain how the hate crime or incident has affected you – knowing that your concerns will be taken seriously
- You will receive practical and emotional support and advice
- We will advocate with other agencies on your behalf and refer you to other sources of help
You can make an appointment to see us at Bede House or we can arrange to meet you at a more convenient location. We will also arrange a convenient time; this does not have to be during office hours if you work office hours.
What action can you take?
It is important to report all LGBT hate crimes or incidents
to someone, whether you experience it yourself or know someone who has.
Without reporting
the crime or the incident the harassment will continue.
Here are some precautions that can be taken:
- keep a record of the harassment - including dates, times, location, details of the offenders or any witnesses
- report the crime or incident to someone as soon as possible and ask for help
- in an emergency always dial 999
